Bearish sentiment is roaming through Wall Street right now, so I thought I would look back on another occasion when the market was going through similar turmoil and I wrote about the following eight stocks, which I thought would be "safe havens" in such a storm.

Six of the eight did well and two did not, and of course one of those two was a disaster. Among the losers, I do not think anyone is fretting about UPS, which is still one of the few triple-A rated companies along with Berkshire Hathaway. It has been well reported that the slowing economy and higher fuel prices have been the major culprits affecting UPS's earnings. In the case of WaMu, it's demise has also been well reported, but at the time I recommended it WaMu had a stellar reputation of growth and high yield for over two decades. There is no hiding, it turned out to be a lousy pick and an ANTI-SAFE Haven

NOT SAFE:

United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) closed Monday at $65.30 down from $78.40; a 16.71% loss

Washington Mutual (NYSE: WM) closed Monday at $4.21 down from $45.50; a 98% loss.

Fortunately the remaining six picks have done very, very well. If you had bought the pool, the average gain over the last two years would have been 7.14%. Adding the dividends over the two years would have raised this to 13.14%.

In comparison over the same period, the S&P 500 is down about 3%, so adding back the dividends would put you at break even.

VERY SAFE:

Anheuser-Busch (NYSE: BUD) closed Monday at $67.82 up from $45.50; a 49.05% gain.

Petro China (NYSE: PTR) closed Monday at $124.48 up from $110.90; a 12.25% gain.

Proctor & Gamble (NYSE: PG) closed Monday at $71.27 up from $55.70; a 27.95% gain.

Southern Company (NYSE: SO) closed Monday at $37.61 up from $32.50; a 15.72% gain.

Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) closed Monday at $58.83 up from $43.30 a 35.87% gain.

At times some readers not familiar with my transparent posts have viewed my recounting such data as tooting my own horn too loudly. I always take great pain (and it is painful) to post my bad calls as well as the good. I revisit this old story to confirm even to myself how I'm doing and whether there is any merit to posting my thoughts on investing and to what benefit. I put my money where my mouth is and lost money on WaMu. If you did as well, I hope you benefited from the broader pool of safe havens.

For those who are interested, I recently took another stab at seeking stability and posted Serious Money: Five stable stocks for troubled times. China is now considering a 90% reduction according to news reports. Athletes are staying in other countries until the games begin so that they may train somewhere they can breathe. There are also reports that many athletes involved in stamina events will be forced to wear masks to protect themselves from the particulates in the air.

Now Reuters is reporting that "Some International Olympic Committee officials cut a deal to let China block sensitive websites despite promises of unrestricted access, a senior IOC official admitted on Wednesday."

So the world media will not be able to do their jobs in a manner they are accustomed to. But who are we actually referring to? Western media, of course, because half the world still limits access to information to some degree.

The biggest problem for the Chinese and the West is, and has always been, one of communication. The Chinese have made great strides to improve the paltry conditions that I will not even refer to as a living standard for their people. And yes, they are control freaks. I have witnessed that here too, although it is the western media that tries to balance this out. But we want to impose our rules and our timetable on another country and another people without walking a mile in their shoes.

They too do not understand much about the West and have been a closed society for so long that what some see as limited progress is actually gargantuan. Then there is Tibet, another controversy that will not go away in our lifetime.

In the meantime, investors the world over have been supporting Chinese markets and most large companies can't stop salivating over the expansiveness of China's market potential. I own Chinese stocks and our site has posted a multitude of stories on the subject. Some of the companies worth watching include:

While the difference between the two companies remains slim, Exxon Mobil can now claim its position at the top thanks to a market cap of an amazing $455.8 billion, compared to PetroChina's market cap of "only" $453.1 billion. Since going public last November, shares of PetroChina have been in free fall, giving back 58% of its value.

The fall from grace for PetroChina is being linked to record high oil prices which put a squeeze on profit margins for the eight year old Chinese company. It has been a tough year for all Chinese stocks, which on average have dropped 25% so far in 2008. The recent run up in oil prices has also led to a slight drop in Exxon Mobil stock, but only a 3% pullback since the time of PetroChina's listing in November.

Drilling costs have also hurt PetroChina, as the company saw its costs climb 30% last year. Here again Exxon Mobil proved superior with the company actually showing a drop of 3.1% last year for similar expenses.

While the race for the world's biggest company is still a close one, for now at least, Exxon Mobil can once again boast the title of top dog. How long that will last remains to be seen, I think we could definitely see this title continue to change hands a couple more times this year.

(NYSE: TWC) are discussing a plan to fund a new wireless Internet venture that would be run by Sprint Nextel Corp. (NASDAQ: CLWR) and create a nationwide network using WiMax technology. This would provide faster wireless Web connection speeds for laptops and cell phones than the current networks, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Jabil Circuit may slip after the electronics maker cut its annual earnings guidance. Caving to pressures from activist investor Carl Icahn to make changes, the AP reported that "Motorola said it will split the handset business from a separate company that will encompass its home and networks business, which sells TV set-top boxes and modems, and its enterprise mobility solutions, which sells computing and communications equipment to businesses." MOT stock is up over 5.7% in premarket trading.

Deutsche Bank (NYSE: DB) said Wednesday that turmoil in global markets may endanger its annual profit forecast for $13.1 billion. DB stock has declined in Frankfurt trading.

Citigroup's Mark Mahaney believes Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) may increase its bid for Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) from $31 to $34 a share. The analyst believes Microsoft will not shy away from the deal, and while there are no other bidders, Yahoo! is pursuing other strategic alternative like getting content from Time Warner (NYSE: TWX). This could entice Microsoft to up the bid. Not only that, the analyst says, but looking at other deals, a higher multiple could be argued, putting the price in the mid $30s. YHOO stock is not really reacting to this analyst note at the moment.

Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) is once again the world's biggest company by market value, overtaking PetroChina Co. (NYSE: PTR) as the latter's shares have slumped 58% since its listing in Shanghai, reducing its market capitalization to $453.1 billion. Exxon Mobil was valued at $455.8 billion on Tuesday after rising 13% in the past year on record energy prices. Rising drilling costs squeezed profits at PTR despite $100 a barrel oil prices. To compare, PetroChina's refineries lost $54 million a week last year while Exxon Mobil's refining business had profit of $184 million a week in 2007. Also, PetroChina's costs for drilling wells and building pipelines jumped 30% in 2007, compared with a 3.1% drop in such expenses at Exxon Mobil.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Big drops in Asia markets: LFC, PTR, CHL

Filed under: PetroChina Co Ltd ADR (PTR), China Life Insurance ADS (LFC), China Mobile Limited (CHL)

Markets in Asia fell sharply

The Chinese want to be players on the world stage without accepting the responsibility that goes along with it, and that was not acceptable to Spielberg. There has been growing pressure around the world on the Chinese, who purchase most of Sudan's oil and sell them weapons, to exert political and economic pressure on the government of Sudan. While Spielberg is only one more voice in a long list condemning Chinese actions and the lack there of, he is a very prominent voice.

Governments, Olympic athletes, religious leaders and shareholders have been complaining that China was not doing enough, if anything to curb the violence. This was an issue with Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A) shareholders at their 2007 annual meeting. While stating that he sold off BRK's interest in PetroChina (NYSE: PTR) based on valuation, Warren Buffett was completely divested in a matter of months and the stock has fallen almost 40% from its highs.

Granted most of this loss is probably due to inflated valuation but I believe that Buffett's reduced position and voicing negative sentiment about Chinese stocks played a role.

In the meantime, Spielberg's walking away from the games shines one more light on China's role in Sudan and its efforts to prevent international criticism of its support for the Sudanese government from tarnishing the Summer Games.

Over the last quarter, the S&P is down a little over 10%. That is not much compared with the Hang Seng Index in China, which was off 24% during the same period and was recently down 30%.

Some of the world's largest companies are listed on the Hang Seng including cellular service giant China Mobile (NYSE:CHL) and big oil concern PetroChina (NYSE:PTR).

The bear market in Hong Kong may be a sign of concern that a dying recovery in the West will slow down exports from China. It is also a sign that inflation in the world's most populated country may be eroding the value of equities.

The most important byproduct of the drop in the value of Chinese shares is that the large middle class which has developed in the country could start to feel pinched. Much of their net worth is based on stock and real estate prices. If these consumers stop consuming, the Chinese economy could take a surprising and profound hit to spending inside the country.
